  • Our History

Background / History of St. Brigid’s Family and Community Centre:
St Brigid’s Social Services Centre was established in 1984 by the Sisters of Mercy under the leadership of Sr. Maria McGuiness. Over the years the Centre evolved into the present Family and Community Centre which is led by a Board of Directors drawn from community interests in the city and representatives of groups using the Centre.

St. Brigid’s Centre is supported by the Sisters of Mercy, FAS, the HSE and the Family Support Agency and operates to community development principles.

The Centre offers a range of activities and services including Adult Counselling, Couple and Relationship Counselling, Counselling and facilitating young people with difficulties involving bereavement, separation or divorce.

    The Family Resource Centre:
In 2000, the Centre established a Family Resource Centre to develop further its community development role in the Inner City of Waterford. St. Brigid’s Family Resource Centre currently employs a Coordinator, two Community Development Workers and an Administrator. In 2005 it was agreed with the Family Support Agency, the Board of Directors of St. Brigid’s Family and Community Centre and Framework (Regional Support Agency) that the Family Resource Centre would become a section of the overall centre. This was a strategic shift for the Centre.

In 2005 a new part time administrator for the Family Resource Centre Programme was employed and in 2007 a full time Coordinator, a full time Community Development Worker and a part time Community Development Worker were employed. St. Brigid’s Family Resource Centre provides a safe welcoming environment, one of its main aims is to encourage and support the people of Waterford Inner City to become more actively involved in the decisions that affect their lives within their own community area.

Funded by the Family Support Agency, the Family Resource Centre aims to provide a range of supports and services to the local community under the principles of community development and family support by providing information, advice and practical assistance to community groups such as training various programmes and activities, etc.

The aims of the Family Resource Centre include the ongoing development of programmes and activities in the near future in response to the needs of the local community.

    Children’s Centre:
In 2009, Minister Martin Cullen officially opened the St. Brigid’s purpose built state of the art Children’s Centre which acts as a one stop shop for parenting needs. It provides family support through the provision of affordable fulltime, part-time and afterschool childcare, i.e. Crèche, Pre-School and an Afterschool Service. Information on parenting is also available to the community on a one to one basis or as part of our Parenting Programme which is offered through the Children’s Centre designed and facilitated by the Family Resource Centre staff.
